My internet is being inexplicably wonky.
Saw Dark Knight last night (at 12:28am, so second day ticket sales?). Kind of not really worth the excitement. Heath Ledger was +++++, and the rest of the performances were evenly strong (a great role for pretty boy Aaron Eckhart), but the plot was fumbly and trying to hard to be politically relevant (but not quite saying anything clearly and outright). Christian Bale's Batman voice made me want to crack up every time. And I'm so sick of typical American super fast cuts during action scenes! I guess some people like to feel the rush of the moment, but I'm not in the moment, I'm watching it, and I want to take it all in! Let the camera linger a little, would you please? And all the moralizing via modified game theory dilemmas (William Poundstone/Gregory Stock much?). Sheesh. I do like that Batman isn't blindly revered -- the complexity of his morality in relationship to Harvey Dent's is worthwhile. Reading other reviews (
Slate's and
Nerve's movie blog's), I kind of don't know what to think, because I can see agreeing with them both, which I guess is the problem (not that they're exactly mutually exclusive). One reviewer elsewhere said, "The Dark Knight is a film one can respect, it is very difficult to enjoy." I concur: I did not walk out of the theater with that feeling of satisfaction from having seen a movie that pulled me along in the right way or gave me something intellectually concrete to chew on. Overall, it was a well put together film, one of the best comic book movies, a good movie movie, but not reaching to all the heights it aspired to.
Overcast days in Hollywood are foreboding. I really need to get dressed and go to work. What I'd like to do is my laundry and take out my twists. I am going to be so exhausted come Sunday. Oh me, oh my.
